Master Shields is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Marcus Renato (Team Carlson Gracie), a 4th degree black belt in Tenshin Shin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, a 5th degree black belt in Kenpo Karate, a black belt in Shorngi Ryu Kempo karate, a black belt in Aikido, a black belt in Russian Sambo, a black belt in Ken-Jutsu, a black belt instructor in Modern Arnis under Grand Master Remy Presas, a Baltintawak Arnis instructor under Grand Master Bobby Taboada, an instructor in Jeet Kune Do under Sifu Dan Inosanto, an instructor in the Filipino Martial Arts under Guro Dan Inosanto, a full instructor in Kali under Punung Guro George Mandropilias, a Jeet Kune Do instructor under Sifu Larry Hartsell, a Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do instructor under Sifu Rob Kelly, a Filipino Martial Arts instructor under Guro Rob Kelly, a Muay Thai instructor under Kru Rob Kelly and an instructor in Combat Submission Wrestling under Erik Paulson.

Master Shields won the IJA Light Heavy Weight World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in 1996. In 1997 he won the Light Heavy Weight National Sport Jiu-Jitsu Championships. He won the South Carolina State Submission Wrestling Championships in 1997 and the North Carolina State Submission Wrestling Championships in 1998. In 1999 he was the Fairtex II Middleweight Muay Thai Champion. His competition record is 50-3. In 2007 he was inducted into the World Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame.


He has trained over 60 champions to world class level and taught local and national law enforcement officers, FBI and Secret Service as well as armed forces including Special Forces and Navy SEALs.
