Silat and Kali
Silat
There are many different styles of Silat found in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This art was developed to help the natives survive invasions from other countries. The style that we focus on at Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy is Maphilindo Silat. It is a system founded by Guro Dan Inosanto. Guro Inosanto has studied Silat from Malaysian, Indonesian and Philippino masters. To honor all of his instructors he combined these styles and has created a highly effective system of fighting. He has incorporated empty hand strikes, kicks, knees, and elbows as well as off balancing sweeps from each method.
Kali
Kali originated in the Philippines. It utilizes weapons of all different lengths and sizes, both bladed and blunt, as well as empty hand work using feet, hands, knees, elbows, throws, grappling, joint locking, pressure points, pinching and biting, and in many areas projectile weapons.
Target age: 13+.
Please note that age in the Adult Programs is just a guideline. Students may be allowed to enroll in a class regardless of age at the Sensei's discretion.
