Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.
Our program here at SSMAA will focus on the multifaceted MMA by approaching each aspect individually. Also, by applying concepts and drills, one is able to better grasp the difference between MMA and self-defense -- as many would like you to believe, MMA is not real fighting and Master Shields helps illustrate this fluidly.
A few local MMA stars have been under the tutelage of Master Shields. Ashley "No Limit" Nee is an amateur MMA fighter and has been at the academy for nearly 5 years, during that time she decided to compete in MMA; her record is (2 - 0), with both of her wins coming by decision -- one of which won Fight of the Night Honors. Keith "The Beast" Baldwin also studied under Master Shields, training with him for nearly 10 years. He recently made his MMA debut, knocking out his opponent in the first round.
Target age: 13+.
Please note that age in the Adult Programs is just a guideline. Students may be allowed to enroll in a class regardless of age at the Sensei's discretion.
